Here’s what makes me grumpy: People who criticize someone for dozing off. Face it: We sapiens doze. We senior sapiens can doze anywhere: family gatherings, church, in the middle of a conversation—but is dozing bad? Of course not. Do what I do: Change what others may call dozing to something that sounds like it’s good for you. Mindful meditation, power napping, energy boost. Let’s face it, you feel better after a doze. So you missed out on some pretty boring stuff, you’re refreshed. So the next time one of your adult children gives you grief for dozing off just tell them you’re increasing your motor performance, reducing anxiety and being mindful. You can’t argue being mindful. I’m grumpy old Dan Smith and I need a nap!
Dozing

Heh. The Nap. I think the puritan work ethic that lurks somewhere in our civlizational (spell check thinks I just made up a word) DNA still works to give naps a bad rap, as though letting the body and mind relax for 30 minutes (or an hour, or, well, who’s keeping track?) is a guilty pleasure we should feel at least some shame for. Isn’t sloth one of the 7 deadly sins? So what if a few drinks happened to proceed the period of the nap. The strange thing is, my own relationship to the nap has gone through various life stages. Of course as a newborn we mostly sleep, except when we DON’T. As a child I hated naps. Think of everything I must have been missing. My mother had to practically drag me to my bed and tie me down in it in order to get an hour a day to check out and watch Days of Our Lives. “Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.” And then for a long period of my life naps had no real relevance. And now, they are one of the great luxuries in life. And how good can a pleasure be that is not also accompanied by at least a little guilt? And ultimately we’ll all end with the long dirt nap. One other tool in your arsenal you might find useful is to claim you are a Polyphasic sleeper. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biphasic_and_polyphasic_sleep This will make you sound like you have a more scientific reason for random dozing.
